This August, Historic Huguenot Street is helping
parents take a load off this summer. Each
Tuesday and Thursday morning, children are to the Street for historic crafts and
a related “snack making” project. These
crafts will be themed around the European nations tied to the founding of New
Paltz. Tuesday in August, beginning August 5th, is designed for children ages 4
to 6. Thursdays, beginning August
7th, are 7 to 11 year-olds. Each
session is 9:30 to 11:30am. Programs are held from 9:30 to 11:30. Each program
is $10 per child; $8 for HHS members. This program is held in Deyo Hall on Broadhead Avenue between
Huguenot and North Chestnut Streets in Downtown New Paltz.
For more information, contact Jennifer Champ at jenn@huguenotstreet.org
or 255.1660. What is known today as Historic Huguenot Street began in 1678 when
twelve French-speaking Huguenots settled on the banks of the Wallkill River.
Today, steps from downtown New Paltz, HHS features seven stone houses
dating to 1705 and a reconstructed 1717 stone church on park-like grounds and
offers unique programming to the local community and visitors alike.
The story of these Huguenot families continues at Locust Lawn, which
features a Jeffersonian mansion and the earlier Evert Terwilliger House.

The Nourishing Wisdom Healthy Eating Series at the Kingston Farmers'
Market
When : Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 11am Eating for Energy
Taught by Holly Anne Shelowitz, certified Nutrition Counselor. Eating Healthy
never tasted so good! We all find high and low energy points throughout each
day. Many times the immediate reaction for people is to energize with sugar and caffeine.
Rather than grabbing a quick fix with caffeine and sugary sweets, Holly
will instruct us on alternatives that are readily available.
Holly shops the market before she begins her sessions, so she is able to
use products, that are in season and at the market that day.
One of the key factors at being successful with healthy eating habits, is
being empowered with the knowledge of what is available to maintain a healthy
way of life and having those products readily available.
Having the Farmers' Market on hand makes this a breeze. Holly's creative
approach to nutrition is always a delicious treat for all in attendance, since
the audience is encouraged to sample her sumptuous snacks.
"Eating for Energy" should be on the top of your list, if you
want to find healthy eating ideas to incorporate into your daily menu that will
lift your energy level. The Kingston Farmers' Market is open every Saturday from
9-2 until November.

Artists’ Soapbox Derby announces a new Award Category
Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, the Artists’ Soapbox
Derby mixes things up again! With the 14th Annual Artist’s Soapbox Derby, set
for Sunday, August 17th, looming on the horizon, Derby officials have announced
that the Youth Group Category has been eliminated replaced with a new prize
category– The Family Group Award. The Youth Group Category was initiated four
years ago to encourage schools, summer camps and not-for-profit groups to design
and build a kinetic sculpture. In spite of brilliant entries by the Children’s
Home of Kingston, S.C.O.R.E., and The Art Lab of Saugerties, Derby organizers
noticed that the majority were created by families – moms, dads, uncles,
aunts, cousins, etc., getting together with kids to build a soapbox derby car.
Aside from hard, cold cash, the most popular prize in the arsenal of Artists’
Soapbox Derby awards is the Rondout Reject Award. Good luck! For more
information about the derby visit their website at www.ArtistSoapboxDerby.com
or call the derby hotline at 845-338-8473. And remember it is never too early to
start building your soapbox.

Tales of the Middlesex Canal at ASK, August 22-24
On Friday and Saturday, August 22 and 23, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 24, at
4:00 p.m., the Arts Society of Kingston, 97 Broadway, Kingston, will present
Tales of the Middlesex Canal, a work for the stage by Woodstock author Lewis
Gardner, directed by Bruce Grund. Performers are distinguished local actors
Keith Bulluck, Mourka, Brett Owen and Linda Reznick. Music has been written by
and will be performed by folk guitarist Geoff Miller, with additional music by
Sandra Gardner. Tales of the Middlesex Canal combines history and narrative in
the tradition of Under Milk Wood and Spoon River Anthology to present the life
of a small town. The cast of four portray scores of people in the fictional town
of Gladstone, Massachusetts, from the 1700's through the present day. The work
ends with a symbolic journey on the canal as the narrator revisits his past. The
Middlesex Canal, which ran through Middlesex County, Massachusetts, was begun in
1793 and completed in 1803. Operating until 1853, when a railroad along the same
route had made it obsolete, it connected the Merrimack River at Lowell with
Boston Harbor at Charlestown, proving the feasibility of later projects like the
Erie Canal. An earlier version of Tales of the Middlesex Canal was presented at
New York City's Greenwich House Theater with a cast that included Academy
Award-winner Kim Hunter. The work has been performed at a number of theaters and
museums in the Northeast. Gardner's plays have been performed and published in
the United States, Australia, and Russia. Excerpts from Tales of the Middlesex
Canal have been published in the New York Times and other publications. The
suggested donation for the ASK performances is $12.00, to be used for new
construction at ASK's historic center in Kingston's Rondout section.
